Aviation Careers Take Off
by Paul D. Rosevear
The aviation field is attracting many due to the lure of excitement, good compensation, and excellent benefits. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual earnings for commercial pilots was almost $50,000 in 2002, with 10 percent bringing in over $100,000 a year. Median salaries for aircraft pilots and flight engineers was about $110,000. And then there's the extra pay for night and international flights; the life and health insurance financed by airlines; retirement benefits; etc. Additionally, pilots are compensated for every hour they're away from home with an expense allowance, and receive family perks. In fact, their immediate families are usually entitled to free or reduced airfare.

If any of that appeals to you, you'll be happy to know there's no shortage of opportunity in the aviation world. There are more than 600 schools approved by the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure your career in the sky is as responsible as it is fun. After all, in order to really make the most of your upward vision, you'll need to develop particular skills like calculating distances, charting courses, and operating computers, as well as interpersonal skills like being able to address your passengers and manage your staff. You'll need to acquire the sort of intuition that will be second nature when you need to deliver under pressure, whether it's alerting other pilots to changing conditions, modifying your route mid-flight, or dealing with unexpected complications onboard the flight itself. Of course, once that's all under your aviator cap, you can just sit back and enjoy the flight.

Once you've got your education, you'll be comfortable in the cockpit - and you better be, considering most pilots spent about 75 hours a month airborne. Find out if a career in the clouds might be the launch point for your new high-flying lifestyle by exploring aviation schools today!
